I’m Ross, a freelance web developer based in Glasgow, Scotland. I fell in love with web development when I picked it up as a hobby back in 2002. My hobby convinced me to go university to study Computer Science, and I’ve been doing it professionally since I graduated in 2009 with a 2:1 from Strathclyde University.
I enjoy breaking down complex problems into user interface wireframes that are clean, simple, easy to use. I then use a variety of techniques to establish the best solution, including rapid prototyping, usability and A/B testing. Once I have implemented a solution, I like to do further analysis, to see what we can do to improve the design, and ultimately, website conversion rates.
Freelance Web Developer 2008 – Present
I enjoy freelancing and experimenting on several mini web projects in my spare time. This is a great way for me to get to grips with different technologies that I might get the chance to use during office hours. When it comes to my freelance work, my Content Management System of choice is usually WordPress, as in my opinion it has the best community of developers. I’m also familiar with MODx and Drupal, and of course there are times when these Content Management Systems are the best tool for the job.
As well as the technology side, I also have a keen interest in digital marketing. When I work on a website, I try my best to help my client step back, and look at the bigger picture. Why do you want a website? How will your website provide a ROI, and how will we measure it’s success? All important topics that I help my clients consider before a project even starts.
I’m always looking for new projects. If there is something you would like me to help with, please get in touch and we can organise an initial chat.
Gael Ltd, Head of Product Design, Jan 2014 – Present
I’m currently the Head of Product Design for Gael Ltd, and a former Senior Developer, working across mobile apps, cloud based and desktop applications.
Responsible for leading the design team, helping to break complex problems down into simple, clean and easy to understand user interfaces. Also responsible for validating design decisions against end users to ensure all Gael’s products are consistent, and result in a positive user experience.
Day to day my job varies, keeping things exciting, I could be working on anything from a requirements session with a Product Manager, to rapid prototyping, to full feature implementation.
Gael Ltd, Senior Developer, Oct 2010 – Dec 2013
I joined Gael Quality Ltd back in 2010 as a Senior Development Engineer, working primarily on the front-end (including implementation/design and UX) of a ASP.NET MVC4/Backbone.js/jQuery CQRS application. This is great fun to work on, and various aspects such as the Asynchronous UI provided me with new challenges on a daily basis.
Leading a team of both designers and developers. My job was to work closely with Product Owners, Stakeholders, Developers and Graphic Designers to ensure that our solutions and products are well coded, efficient and easy to use.
